Minister's Waffle for Breakfast
Who heard Jacinta Allan this morning spruiking her government's TAFE changes on ABC breakfast radio?
The Minister's interview with compere Jonathon Ridnell on ABC Central Victoria was riddled with error, so let's shed some light on a few things:
Minister Allan argued today that our campaign is going to dissuade students from applying for TAFE.
But does Jacinta Allan really think the Victorian public is so stupid as to not notice when they arrive at the TAFE cash register that, when they go to pay their TAFE fees, the prices have hiked right up?
Does the Minister not think that THIS will turn students away?
An elitist and effectively privatised system will inevitably leave behind the people without thousands of dollars to spend on study and those who are averse to debt.
The Victorian Government has spent $16.1 million to plug its "skills reform package" (read: "cost-shifting exercise") to the public.
How educated has that left YOU about increased TAFE fees, abolished concessions, effective privatisation of our TAFE system? It's been left to the Tafe4All campaign to let the public know what the government is doing so they have the opportunity to fight to change it.
Minister Allan also seemed to think that we were saying something new with this campaign. Sorry Minister, but the TAFE community has been telling you ever since you first floated these proposals that they would be bad for students and bad for Victoria.
The Minister didn't listen and went full steam ahead with these changes in the face of all the evidence.
This government must revoke the changes to prevent education opportunities being lost.
Minister Allan's government won't give you the full picture about the TAFE changes, but we will - every one of us who speaks up in the TAFE4All campaign about how the changes are hurting us and our community.

If the TAFE go down this route of possibly passing on huge debts to students, i know which piece of paper i would prefer to have. Will there be any students in the class? locals? or internationalists with money? This is a greedy way of making money, I thought the Labor government was meant to be for education?, how will we educate our society if they charge ridiculous amounts of money. Come on TAFE get with the programme!

I'm on the ground, and this reminds me of the student who was crying in my office. One week into the course she was hit for a bill of $3,000 for the semester (she was expecting $750), the course was going to cost her $12,000 in total. The Minister is right - when she found out, she was turned right off TAFE - but she didn't find out from TAFE4ALL, she found out when she got her bill. She dropped out. Bad for students, bad for Victoria and bad for Industry.
