Expect rise in mental health issues and drain on government's purse

We are concerned as Career Facilitators about the advice that we are giving our young people....and our own sons and daughters.

Some of our students have completed Cert III Hospitality and Retail Certificates in large scale organisations that get financial incentives from the government for signing students up in this current year.

These young people will no longer have access to their own hopes, dreams and aspirations as the government in its wisdom has taken away their right to their own pathway....

Who has told who about the enormous fees our children will have to pay?

Low SES families from fringe metropolitan suburbs, are going to be:

• Unemployed
• Unskilled, and
• Disillusioned

That will lead to more:

• Mental health issues
• Drain on government purse, and
• Cementing of long-term, cyclical unemployment

I am in total agreement with Sue, Linda and Jan. The connections have been made time and time again between unemployment and mental health issues. The risk factors and stressors associated with the struggle many have to find work are numerous and can be debilitiating, causing what has been noted as a cyclical unemployment, and possibly cyclical mental health issues aswell. The blindingly obvious and inevitable negative effects that this policy will have on the quality of peoples lives, the choices they have in pursuing their chosen profession, not too mention their mental health should be enough for this policy to be completely overturned. Oh, but wait, then there are more important things like money, and the neo-liberal way of governance. How dissapointing Jacinta.
