Last chance to save TAFE - review ends Sunday

What’s the point of creating new training spaces if people can’t afford to fill them?

Any sane business person would tell you it doesn’t make sense to price people out of the market.

Nearly 300 people have spoken up in the government’s review of its TAFE changes, using words like “ridiculous”, “unfair”, “depressing” and “infuriating” to describe the government’s attack on a fair go at education.

If you haven't yet spoken up in the review, now is your last chance. There are three days left until the review closes on Sunday. There’s still time to get your submission in.

The government continues to repeat its tired line that it has created "an extra 172,000 training places".

But who cares if no-one can afford them?

The overwhelming message from the public submissions to the review so far is This is unfair. Last year I could afford to go to TAFE and this year I can’t.

TAFE teachers are reporting classes with fewer students who are angry at having to work extra shifts to cover increased course costs.

It’s a pretty simple equation, yet the government still hasn’t managed to get it.

Price students out of education, and everybody loses. Teachers lose jobs, students lose choice, the number of skilled Victorians drops.

Minister Brumby, it’s dropping already. Do something about it.

Of course the Government is spinning their stupid concept! Some imbecile with no notion of reality hypothesised this would be a GOOD IDEA and now their career would be under threat if it was officially recognised that they made a mistake! So everybody suffers to cover their stupid arrogance!

The damage this has done will be felt for decades.

Mr Brumby - wake up!

Your funding concept is doing harm and no good.

I grew up believing that TAFE was for the people, embracing those that, for whatever reason, be it financial, location or academic, could not find their place in the higher education system of universities etc.Growing up working class in a working class suburb, TAFE was our only guarantee that we HAD options. Now, 25 years later, and back doing a Diploma, I have no idea how I'm going to pay THIS months fees, let alone the proposed hikes for next year. Regardless of doing extremely well already, I simply may not be able to continue. Beg and borrow only works for a short time....
The Brumby Government hasn't a trace of Labor in it, if it continues to try and make TAFE a competitive money making venture, and we working class folk of whom the Labor government was once made of, are the ones ultimately paying the big price.

In my opion people take tafe as a cheaper option other than UnIversity. So I think Tafe prices should stay as they are because Tafe is a great study pathway for ALL.
